Member Showcase: Alex Boyce

ACFO-ACAF is excited to launch our Member Showcase series, a feature on ACFO-ACAF members who have shown exceptional dedication to their work, made a difference in their workplace and made a profound impact on the CT Community. You’ll learn about these members’ stories, their contributions and how they’ve made an impact on their community.

Meet Alex

Alex joined the government as a FSWEP student and has recently completed the Financial Officer recruitment and development program. She is a dynamic individual that brings so much positivity and energy to the work environment. Alex is a true example of a team player that is always there to support her colleagues with the planning, development and delivery of any project or task.

It’s impressive that Alex is in the early stages of her career, and she has already had a significant impact on the community through her work on the Financial Management Community development (TBS) team. Her creativity, initiatives and ideas have contributed to the overall improvement of the development programs, various student events and the development of the external website for the finance community.

Alex is a great asset to the community, and it’s exciting to think of what she can and will accomplish with her whole career ahead of her.

What’s your name, classification, and department?

I’m Alex Boyce and I’m an FI-02 at Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat.

In a few sentences, what do you do?

I work for the Financial Management and Community Development (FMCD) team, and we strive to attract, develop, and retain a diverse workforce of finance professionals to ensure a strong and sustainable community. We do that because finance has an impact on all areas of government, so by building and investing in this community, we are able to ensure that everyone can achieve their goals, manage their career, and help to shape the future of finance. In order to empower this community, collaboration is really key. We as FMCD work with many institutions from universities, FMI, and ACFO which enables us to offer the community some amazing initiatives that generally fall into one of two categories—one being outreach and recruitment, and the other is learning and development. That notably includes the one-million-dollar training fund that we co manage with ACFO, including professional development sessions and development programs. For me, I closely work with the Financial Officer Recruitment and Development (FORD) program to help entry level finance professionals obtain their CPA. Overall, I would say that I work to improve the lives of finance professionals and help them improve their careers.

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?

Three things come to mind as far as what I like to do for fun. One is that I am a girl guide leader, in particular a brownie leader which is for girls ages seven and eight. What that involves is that once a week, we all gather throughout the school year to do really fun activities like cookie selling, science experiments, arts and crafts, and more. I really like it because it’s a lot of fun, and it helps me build confidence in young girls. The second thing is that in the summertime, because of remote work, I have been fortunate enough to spend summers at a cottage where I can go kayaking, sightseeing and overall, just relax. Last, I would say is that I like watching bad reality TV and movies with my partner and our pets.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

I started with the government as a student, and because of the FORD program for entry level finance professionals, I’m able to go to networking events and connect with current students to help them get interested in the public service and navigate their career. It really makes me feel like I’m making a difference in their lives and helping them, which is why I would say it’s my favourite part of my job.

Why are you proud to be a part of the CT Community? And what advice would you give to someone new to the CT Community?

Explore your classification and your community, because there are so many resources out there to help you. This can be done by talking to your manager, colleagues, peers, or even just looking around online. If you’re in finance, I know that there’s an external website that you can access on any device, and no matter where you are, that’s designed to help you during your career, whether you’re a student all the way to a CFO. I know that when I started with the government, I didn’t know that all of these resources were out there, and with community development, I’m able to say that yes in fact they are, which is why my best advice is to just explore.
