Meet Christopher

Christopher is recognized by his coworkers as an individual who goes out of his way to engage with others in the workplace and create an environment where team members, new and old, feel welcomed and appreciated.

He’s an active participant in many events hosted for the CT Community, and is always willing to do whatever he can to help the team succeed.  

What’s your name, classification, and department?

My name is Christopher Flores Lyons. I’m an FI-02 with Shared Services Canada and I work with our resource management division.

In a few sentences, what do you do?

On a day-to-day basis, what I’m doing in our resource management division is focusing on internal reporting and reporting on projects for our senior management. The coolest part about my job is getting to work within the public service and knowing that I’m working with our public money and my own money in a way. Working for Shared Services Canada, I get to see a lot of the different projects we’re doing to modernize and digitize the government. My work is helping to improve waiting times when you’re dealing with the government and helping to digitize a lot of the services that the government provides. For me, that’s one of the greatest parts of my job.

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?

In my spare time, you’ll often find me either gaming on my Xbox or building Lego. I have quite a few Lego sets, so many that I’m starting to outgrow my own apartment. I also like going out for walks and going to enjoy the outdoors. It’s great working in the capital region because I’m so close to Gatineau Park and getting to see a lot of the mountains and fresh air that we have in the region.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

Within our department we have people working in project management or on the more technical and IT sides as well as getting to work with a lot of other financial management professionals. Part of my job is getting to work and learn from a lot of these different subject matter experts in order to do their reports on their finances and how they’re spending. I’ve also been able to learn a little bit about what they do and how they’re how they’re helping the organization.

Why are you proud to be a part of the CT Community?

One of the things that makes me proud to be part of the CT Community is the great amount of diversity that we have. We have people working in so many different organizations across the country. I get to meet with a lot of those different people, and I get to make connections across Canada as well as getting to work in a domain that helps make sure that we’re responsible using our taxpayer’s money and our own money.

What advice would you give to someone new to the CT Community?

For anyone that’s new to the CT community, I recommend getting out there and joining some of the different events or different working groups that your organization has, whether that be government-wide, departmental or within your own organization. Doing this will allow you to meet lots of different types of people. You’ll start building your network, when you’re first starting to be able to hear from other people’s experiences, and getting to learn from other people’s recommendations is one of the most important things I think you can do as you’re starting off your CT career.
