Meet Tim

Tim is described by his colleagues as being dedicated, innovative, and a model of leadership. When the team falls onto hard times, he’s looked upon as a motivating voice who’s an integral part of solving problems, oftentimes by coming up with unique and creative solutions. Tim is admired for his willingness to be a voice for those too shy to speak up for themselves, fighting everyday for what is right but also what can be done to improve the lives of his peers, staff, the CT Community, and of all Canadians.

Outside of work, Tim is a father of three, who are all very talented hockey players. Tim spends much of his free time outside of work acting as a shuttle for his kids to make sure that everyone gets to their respective practices, games, and tournaments. On top of looking after his own kids, Tim also mentors CPA students working towards their designation to help better their skills and strengthen the CT Community.

What’s your name, classification, and department?

I’m Tim Byrd, I’m an FI-3 with Correctional Service Canada. I’m the regional Chief of Financial Services for the Ontario region of Correctional Service Canada.

In a few sentences, what do you do?

I have functional oversight of all the general accounting functions for each of the federal institutions in Ontario.

What do you like to do for fun in your spare time?

I love the outdoors, so I love to camp, fish, swim, canoe, kayak, all that stuff. I love to watch sports, especially NFL football. I’m also heavily involved with my kids’ activities, so all of their sporting events that they go to.

What’s your favourite part of your job?

My favourite part of my job is basically the human resource management aspect, I’ve had to hire a bunch of new staff from some of the lower levels. We lost a lot of staff with many years of experience due to retirement, so the ability to build the team has been really rewarding.

Why are you proud to be a part of the CT Community? And what advice would you give to someone new to the CT Community?

I’m proud to be part of the CT community because we help to provide management with the critical information they need to make decisions.

My advice for someone new to the CT community is if you plan to get your accounting designation, try and do it before you have kids. Another piece of advice I have would be that if you’re interested in progressing through your career and progressing to the next level, apply to every competition that comes out, because having that and developing that ability is going to get you ahead.
